Angry Leviathan

The war in Iraq,
has it ever ended?
When 100 planes
In a single day
are said
to drop their bombs
(No fly zone?
Call it what you wish,
it’s still Iraq)
then what is it
if not war?
When ‘sanctions’
or what in former days
was known as ‘siege’
cause so many
to suffer,
what is that
if not war?
The war has never ceased.
It’s just that they,
the Thugs,
now want to finish the job
by evoking flames of hell.
And yet the tiresome inertia
caused by months
of witnessing nation
after nation
bend to the will
of the Angry Leviathan,
has made us torpid
and punch drunk.
And as it
begins its march
once more,
an unstoppable juggernaut
crushing everything
in its path,
we watch
helplessly
as if observing
a gigantic freak of nature.
Realising nothing can be done,
we duck and run for cover.
Once
we would have needed to appease
the wrath of God.
Now it’s the Angry Leviathan
who demands
his Sacrifice of Blood.
